Congratulations to LadyKiller, @hu.rebecca.a for being the female winner of our latest #MuscleBuildChallenge with @foodisfuelnyc 

Rebecca committed to following Ryan’s nutrition guidance for muscle and strength gains, and gained 1.1lb of muscle + a 0.4% body fat decrease in 30 days.

“Imagine a world without limits. That was my experience with the nutrition challenge. For the first time ever, I was being encouraged to eat as much as possible (at least 2,000 calories per day) with the guideline of eating at least 150g of protein per day. While this may sound like potential freedom to eat as many donuts as possible, in reality, it was a fascinating self experiment with lots of lessons about pacing and learning more about my likes and dislikes. I had to learn to pace myself, because trying to eat over 50+ g of protein at the end of the day is not gonna happen. Pacing myself meant trying to incorporate protein into every meal throughout the day and trying to incorporate as many protein sources into breakfast. It also meant figuring out protein choices and giving me decision making power about eating what I wanted to eat without thinking about limits. However, the best part about this challenge was better understanding the relationship to food and lifting. If I didn't eat protein before strength classes, lifting was a major struggle and it made me feel like I was running on an empty gas tank. But when I fueled up before class, amazing things happened. I went from squatting 155 lbs before the challenge to squatting 205 lbs at the end of the challenge and since then, I have continued squatting 205 lbs for my last set of squats.” - Rebecca Hu

To finish #InternationalWomensMonth strong, our last spotlight of the month is a LadyKiller who has been putting in serious work on the Turf, Madison Houston (@madshuey ). Madison had never lifted with a barbell prior to starting Tone House Strength sessions, and now she’s hitting PRs left and right. 

Q: How long have you been training at Tone House?

A: I've been training at Tone House since September 2020! 

Q: What do you love most about training at Tone House?

A: The community, how challenging it is, how much the coaches believe in you but also challenge you. Literally everything -

Q: How would you describe the changes, both mentally and physically, you’ve seen through your time at Tone House?

A: Tone House has helped me in so many ways both mentally and physically. I used to be a lot heavier and struggled with my weight for years, I became obsessed with getting as thin as possible and when I started Tone House, my goal was to lose the last 10 pounds. Starting strength classes and working with the dietitian through Tone House (Hi Ryan!) has helped me in so many ways! I don't care about the scale, I am so focused on getting stronger and becoming the healthiest version of myself. My mentality about fitness and diet has changed for the better since Tone House! The physical changes I've seen are great! I must say I am in the best shape I've ever been - I've never lifted like this so seeing the changes brought on by TH is insane! I was scared of getting big/bulky with doing strength classes, but I can assure you that didn't happen!

Q: What is your favorite and least favorite TH movement?

A: Least favorite conditioning move would have to be gallops, my least favorite strength move is any form of deadlift! Every time I see that we will be deadlifting in class I start complaining, but I must say since starting at TH my deadlift form has improved so much. I'm also gonna through in low push - kills me every time. Favorite conditioning movement is backwards bear crawls, I find them so fun! My favorite strength movement is front squats. I know everyone hates them but I actually like doing them!
NEW TO LIFTING? You asked and we delivered. Our ne NEW TO LIFTING?
You asked and we delivered. Our new Intro to Strength format starts next week, and is the perfect place to start for those new barbell-style lifting. If most of your prior strength training experience has been body weight or dumbbell-based, we recommend starting here to learn how these movements translate to lifting with a barbell.

 These sessions will still provide a challenging workout, but the pace and and workload is reduced so we can pay close attention to form, technique, and offer one-on-one assistance to ensure Athletes are completing movements properly.

Intro sessions will be capped at a smaller class sizes, so sign up in advance to book your spot. Experienced lifters are also welcome to join for a refresher on form and maximizing your efficiency on the barbell.

Q: How long have you been training at Tone House?

A: My very first experience was in 2015, but I started coming consistently this fall when TH reopened and added TH Strength (yay!) classes.

Q: What do you love most about training at Tone House?

A: There's no place like TH. Period. It's not just the hardest workout, but it's a community where people come together to get better, grow stronger, be faster, and transform their lives. It sounds dramatic, but I love leaving every class inspired by my coaches' support and the work ethic of my fellow athletes.

Q: What is your favorite and least favorite TH movement?

A: This is tough because I know that even the things I hate are good for me! My least favorite is backwards up downs, mostly because I feel SO uncoordinated. My favorite is anything that involves the sled. Whether high push, low push, row and pull - doesn't matter, I want all the bags!

Q: How long have you been training at Tone House?

A: 3 years.

Q: What do you love most about training at Tone House? 

A: I really love the energy and teamwork mentality. Regardless of how my day is going, whenever I walk into class I instantly feel energized by the coaches and athletes around me-- everyone is excited to be there, ready to work hard, and wants to encourage and support you. The community is truly like no other-- I have made some of my best friends at Tone House, and I have been able to continue to elevate my goals and challenge myself to reach new fitness milestones (even during lupus flare ups!) thanks to the tremendous efforts of every coach and TH team member. ....The competitive former athlete in me also, of course, loves that this is truly the most challenging workout experience out there :)

Q: What is your favorite and least favorite TH movement?

A: Probably an unpopular opinion, but I love gallops, and anything and everything on the sleds. I have a love hate relationship with drop downs...
