runner running a raceMeet Elena Moffa, a badass runner and #ladykiller who shaved an astounding 8 minutes off her time and PR-ed this spring at the Boston Marathon – much of which she credits to her Tone House cross-training.

Here’s why Elena keep coming back to the Turf…

FITNESS/ATHLETIC BACKGROUND: Marathon Runner/Former D1 Athlete/Bootcamp Lover/Spin Addict/Boxing Badass/Fitness Freak

WHAT WAS YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE (PRIOR TO TONE HOUSE)? Running, HITT workouts, SoulCycle, boxing, and hot yoga

HOW OFTEN DO YOU TRAIN AT TONE HOUSE?  1 – 2 times per week

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN COMING TO TONE HOUSE? Almost 1 year.  Actually, 11 months and 331 days to be exact 😉

WHAT OTHER WORKOUTS DO YOU DO WEEKLY? I like to switch it up as much as possible. When I am not training for a marathon, I usually hit the Turf at least 1-2x a week, run 2-3x a week, box and spin 1x a week. During marathon training it’s pretty much the same, with more running and yoga added into the mix.

HOW DID YOU FIRST HEAR ABOUT TONE HOUSE? I heard about the infamous reputation of being “the hardest and most intense workout in NYC” by word of mouth. Then after reading similar reviews on ClassPass, I decided to see what the hype was about for myself. NOTE: TRUST THE REVIEWS, THEY DON’T LIE.

REASON FOR COMING TO CLASS INITIALLY/ FITNESS GOALS? I needed to see what all the hype was about. I pride myself on constantly pushing my body to its limits and challenging it in every which way, so naturally I was drawn to the intimidating reputation.

FAVORITE TONE HOUSE CLASS?   LOVE to HATE Conditioning Day!

FAVORITE TONE HOUSE “TOY” (EQUIPMENT) TO USE IN CLASS: Bungee ropes!

WHAT HAVE BEEN THE BENEFITS OF COMING TO TONE HOUSE FOR YOU? Wow so many! Aside from the natural physical benefits and the way it has changed my body, Tone House has given “working out” an entirely new meaning. The House is a community and a team led by some of the most encouraging and welcoming coaches out there. I love the mental toughness involved in the friendly competition, the unity you feel cheering for your teammates, and the humbled badass you walk out the door as. Not to mention, the new running PR it’s given me 😉

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT TONE HOUSE THAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER GYMS/WORKOUTS? It’s the ultimate trifecta of community, coaching, and creative programming. Each time you enter the House as an individual and leave as an inspired teammate and humbled athlete. Constantly challenged to a level, way outside of your comfort zone, the feeling of completion is unmatched. The experience and the workouts are never the same, from the intimidating music and the red lights upon arrival, to notorious “warm up” and the very last circle drill you’re pushing yourself to a place you never thought you were capable of, which is pretty freakin’ cool.

Well, it was a Friday…with Zo and Shaun… need I say more?

WHAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK FOR MORE? The entire experience – from the intimidation of the red lights and scary music to the friendly competition which turns into motivating teamwork, the welcoming and inspiring coaches and staff, the feeling of sweet success and badassary all leading to the noticeable change in my athletic performance.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE GREATEST IMPROVEMENT IN YOUR RUNNING SINCE COMING TO TONE HOUSE? This team has taught me to push past my limits many times when I didn’t think I could which has relayed into my running performance. I owe many thanks to the House for the strength and stamina in my strides, my energizer bunny endurance, and overall mental toughness. This past April, I was able to shave almost 8 minutes off of my Boston Marathon time, which to me is incredible, and I owe it to all the blood, sweat and tears spent on the Turf.

HOW MANY RACES DO YOU COMPETE IN, IN A YEAR?  WHAT DISTANCES? A handful of mini distances (5K/10K) with NYRR, at least 1-2 half marathons and last year I ran 3 full marathons. This year I have all the USA World Major Marathons on my schedule (Boston, Chicago, NYC).

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SONG TO RUN TO? Anything with a good beat drop. But if I had to pick one, it has to be “Calling (Lose My Mind)” – It was the song that came on during the last mile of my first full marathon in 2013 and ever since, I make sure it’s the last song to play when I cross every finish line.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TONE HOUSE MEMORY? Probably “completing” the warm up after my first class. I remember feeling totally shaken up and fully understood why Zo and Shaun chuckled when I showed up to my first Tone House class on Conditioning Day (total amateur move). Needless to say, I certainly “left my ego at the door” at that moment and learned to remain humble from there on out.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ALONZO SAYING?  “Find me someone who’s working harder than you and bring them to me.” – Because it’s actually true, no one’s working harder than you.

IF YOU COULD HIT THE TURF WITH ANYONE WHO WOULD IT BE? Gronk

FAVORITE MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE? “Faith it till you make it!”

  1. I am really loving the theme/design of your web site. Do you ever run into any web browser compatibility problems? A couple of my blog readers have complained about my website not working correctly in Explorer but looks great in Safari. Do you have any advice to help fix this problem?
