FITNESS AND ATHLETIC BACKGROUND:

Competitive high school and college athlete

FITNESS ROUTINE PRIOR TO TONE HOUSE: Frustrated aging athlete; sporadic runner; occasional patron of the neighborhood gym; family and work were my go-to excuses for not staying in shape.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU HIT THE TURF?  3 times per week

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN COMING TO TONE HOUSE (# OF WEEKS OR MONTHS)?
5 1/2 months, first class was August 7th 2016

WHAT OTHER WORKOUTS DO YOU DO WEEKLY? Run, weight-lift, and attend boot camp classes.

HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT TONE HOUSE? Matt Cherwin, my personal Tone House Ambassador and kick-ass Turf master.

WHAT WAS YOUR REASON FOR FIRST COMING TO CLASS INITIALLY?  WHAT WERE YOUR FITNESS GOALS?

In addition to simply getting older, I have struggled to stay in shape and have battled with nagging injuries from running, lifting weights and other sports for over a decade.

It was June 17, 2016. Staring at myself in a family photo taken earlier that day with my wife and 2 daughters, I came face-to-face with the fact that I was in the worst physical shape of my life. Reflecting on both my physical health and less than stellar family medical history, and wanting to do best by my wife, kids and the people I work with daily, I became determined to change the path I was on and whip myself back into shape.

That very day, I weighed in at an all-time peak of 220 pounds. Seeing “220” on the scale shocked me. I immediately set a goal – by October 31 – I would cut my weight to 185 pounds.

I drastically changed my diet by omitting junk foods, processed foods, and sugar. I started hitting the gym for 1 hour a day, 5 days a week. While I dropped 10 lbs. within the first six weeks, I quickly became bored with the monotony of a typical gym routine. I needed to “upgrade” my workouts in order to stay on track and make a permanent and lasting change. I wanted a workout that allowed me to train as I did when I was playing team sports back in high school and college. Importantly, I had to find a workout that fit within my hectic schedule and made the most of my limited time by continuously pushing me beyond my limits.

After hearing about Tone House from my friend Matt, I knew it was “no ordinary workout.” I read articles and watched online videos, eager to learn more about the fitness regimen that I was considering. Having lost my father in 2003, at the young age of 60, Alonzo’s reasons for starting Tone House with respect to his Mother resonated with me. I thought to myself, this was THE workout.

On August 7, I took my first step onto the turf for a TH 101 class. I set a personal goal for this class – no matter what, I would complete every single rep of every single exercise, even if I was the last person left in the building at midnight.

On August 7, I took my first step onto the turf for a TH 101 class. I set a personal goal for this class – no matter what, I would complete every single rep of every single exercise, even if I was the last person left in the building at midnight. By the end of the warm up, I was gasping for air. But, I pushed through the class and succeeded, albeit barely.

For the next two weeks, I stuck with the TH 101 classes. In every class, I continued to be the worst performer, by far, sucking wind up and down the turf. That said, the encouragement I received from the Tone House instructors helped me complete each class.

By mid-September, after a month of TH 101’s 2-3x per week, I was no longer completely sucking wind and I was seeing improvement – warm-ups were easier and I was dropping weight. It was then that Adrian suggested to me that I step it up to the regular class. A victory – to most a minor one, but to me, a major feat.

The regular class was harder, more fun and had more energy. The ongoing motivation from the instructors was great and the enthusiasm from the team kept me driven and accountable. Every class allowed me to me to push myself harder. I was becoming physically and mentally stronger. I was proud to see I had moved from the bottom of the pack to keeping pace with the 20- and 30- year olds in my class.

On December 1, after 4 months of training at Tone House 2-3x per week, and roughly 5 overall workouts per week, I decided it was time to step on a scale. It was the first time in months. 170 pounds. 50 pounds lost since mid-June. I crushed my goal.

I can confidently say that my physical transformation would NEVER have happened without Tone House. The sports conditioning workouts boosted my cardio and physical strength to a new level. The movement-based training, team environment and instructors were THE KEY. Tone House has become the core of my workout routine – there is no substitute for hitting the turf.

I can confidently say that my physical transformation would NEVER have happened without Tone House.

Every Tone House class reminds me that age is just a number and exceeding physical goals is only a question of challenging mental limits.

FAVORITE TONE HOUSE CLASS: Lower Body and Core.

FAVORITE TONE HOUSE “TOY” TO USE IN CLASS: It’s all good.

FOR YOU, WHAT HAVE BEEN THE BENEFITS OF COMING TO TONE HOUSE?

I am proud to say I am 75% of the man I used to be. My energy levels are consistently higher. I am more alert and focused at work, home and when working out. Physically, I am faster, stronger, more agile, and my wife and kids are happy I am sporting an entirely revamped wardrobe.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT TONE HOUSE THAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER GYMS/WORKOUTS?

The Team, The Coaches and The Intensity.

It is rewarding to work with a group through different drills. The people in Tone House classes are universally amazing – everyone brings a little something different to each class, raising my energy level and enjoyment.

With respect to the coaches, each one is a pro and has his or her own style of motivation, and every class a coach teaches is different. These men and women are the gold standard.

The Intensity at Tone House is undeniable. I get more out of the hour at Tone House than any other workout – I still have a mild fear of hearing the words “gallop” or “Valslides” but I have also grown to embrace them!

FAVORITE MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:

“Press On.” David B.P. Goodman

OTHER COMMENTS:

Alonzo, your Mother would be proud. Congratulations to you and the Tone House team for putting together a world-class program and studio. I am glad to be a small part of it!

SO WHAT NOW? NEW GOALS:

Move to the top of the TH class, gallop like Adrian, keep up with Alonzo, Evan and Zack, and crush a sub 20-minute 5k by May.

Make 46 the new 26.
