Most marathon plans can get you to the finish line. The right training system helps you get there faster, stronger, and still standing on race day.

When training for your next race, it can feel like every available hour should be spent logging more miles. Long runs get longer, weekly mileage climbs, and recovery becomes increasingly important. However, running more is not always the complete answer. Strength training for long-distance runners may be the missing piece in your marathon training plan.

Tone House’s Strength for Runners class, paired with our weekly Run Club, brings structured lifting, running, recovery, and Team accountability together. The mission is to help Athletes build the horsepower to run faster and the resilience needed to manage the demands of higher mileage.

More Strength, Better Miles

Running economy refers to how efficiently your body uses energy and oxygen while maintaining a certain pace. The more economical your movement becomes, the less energy you may need to sustain that pace.

A 2024 systematic review found that high-load strength training, plyometric training and programs combining multiple strength methods may improve running economy in middle- and long-distance runners.

Your next personal record might not be in another long run, but it may be waiting for you in the weight room.

Build a Body that Can Handle the Impact

Every stride you take places force through your body. Multiply that impact across several weekly runs and hundreds of miles through a marathon build, you need a strong base to handle that.

Structured strength training develops the muscles that support those joints and helps prepare the body to absorb and produce force.

Exercise targeting the glutes, hamstrings, quadriceps, calves, core, and upper body can also help Athletes maintain stronger mechanics as fatigue builds.

Strength work cannot guarantee an injury-free training cycle, but it can help build a stronger foundation for handling increased mileage, longer runs. And the physical demands of race day.

Strength that Supports your Training

Strength for Runners will move through focused four to six-week training blocks based on the demands of marathon training.

Earlier blocks will emphasize strength and power. As mileage and long runs increase, programming will shift toward building and maintaining a strong structural base.

With each Marathon in mind, Athletes approaching race day will receive baseline and recovery-focused exercise options during the taper. This will allow runners to continue moving while reducing fatigue before their marathon.

The initial program calendar will support Athletes preparing for major fall races, including

  • Bank of America Chicago Marathon
  • TCS New York City Marathon
  • TIAA Philadelphia Marathon

FYI: You do not need to be registered for one of these races to participate. The program is open to Athletes preparing for long-distance events, half marathons, future marathons, or anyone looking to build a stronger running foundation.

Train With the Team

A marathon may be an individual event, but you do not have to train alone.

In addition to two weekly strength sessions, Athletes can join the Tone House Run Club every Thursday. New routes, structured programming, and team accountability will help keep you consistent.
